How I Turned My Laptop into a Six-Figure Business (And You Can Too!)

Got a laptop or a computer? Awesome—you’ve already got the first tool you need to start your own virtual assistant (VA) business and work from anywhere. Yes, literally anywhere.
Let me share a little story. I went from zero to building a six-figure VA business—all from my trusty laptop. And guess what? You can do it too.
Let’s break it down.
The Beginning of My VA Journey
Picture this: I was 24, stuck in a 9-5 job, and itching for more freedom. One day, I walked into the Apple store and spent $1,100 on a MacBook Air.
Was I scared? You bet. Spending that much money when I was barely scraping by felt insane. But I told myself, “I’ll make this laptop pay for itself.”
It didn’t happen overnight, but little by little, things started falling into place.
First, I landed a side gig. Then another. Soon, I had regular clients, retainers, and a steady flow of work. Before I knew it, I’d quit my 9-5, started traveling with my husband, and hit six figures.
That one risk turned into the life I’d dreamed of—and it all started with my laptop and a belief in myself.
How You Can Start Your Own VA Journey
Here are the steps that got me where I am—and they can work for you too.
1. Define Your Services
What are you good at? What do you love doing? This isn’t just another job—it’s YOUR business, and you get to build it around what excites you.
Maybe you’re all about organization, content creation, or social media management. Make a list of skills you enjoy and can offer clients. This list will become the foundation of your services—and trust me, when you love what you do, it shows!
2. Create Your Perfect Workspace
Forget the cubicle life! You’re in charge of where you work now.
Love coffee shops? Grab your latte and your laptop and make it your office. Prefer working from your couch? Go for it. All you need is a space that inspires you.
I started at my kitchen table with a vision and a cup of coffee. No fancy desk is required—just a setup that works for you.
3. Build a Stellar Portfolio
Think of your portfolio as your business card—it’s how potential clients see what you’re all about.
It doesn’t have to be complicated. A simple website or a beautifully designed Canva portfolio can do the trick. Highlight your best work and skills to show clients why they should work with you.
4. Embrace the Learning Curve
Here’s the truth: there will be moments when you feel overwhelmed. I’ve been there.
Maybe a client uses a tool you’ve never heard of, or you’re juggling multiple projects. The key is to stay resourceful. Google, YouTube, and even ChatGPT are your best friends.
Every challenge is a chance to learn and grow.
5. Invest in Yourself
Something happened in my brain when I purchased that laptop. It was more than just buying a tool to help me start my business. It was exciting. It was a step towards actually doing something. It created a goal for me to work towards. Most importantly, it seemed to break my limiting beliefs and open up a whole new world of possibilities that I couldn’t see before.
Whether it’s a laptop, a coach, or a course (wink wink), investing in yourself will create that sense of excitement and possibility you need if you want to succeed in… literally anything.
Is It Really Worth It?
Spoiler alert: YES.
Starting my VA business gave me freedom I never thought possible. I’ve traveled the world, spent more time with loved ones, and explored hobbies I never had time for—all while growing my business.
Plus, the opportunities are endless. Every business needs support, which means VAs are in high demand. And once you start offering specialized skills, you can scale your income faster than you ever imagined.
Final Thoughts
You can start your VA business today—all from your laptop.
No, you don’t need to buy a brand new laptop like I did, but you DO need to believe in yourself and take that first step. The freedom, flexibility, and income you’re looking for? It’s waiting for you.
You’ve got this.
